As long as there has been a film-making industry there have been actresses wanting to step in front of the camera. Some of those actresses want to be taken very seriously and will only consider certain prestigious and classy assignments. Others seem to take anything that come their way no matter who they are portraying. Interestingly, though, some of the serious actresses are the ones who will do nude scenes first while the less discerning actresses seem to have keeping their clothes on as their only rule. It’s the way it is and it’s the way it always will be.
One of the biggest surprises in Hollywood is when one of its actresses who have either stated or implied a no-nudity policy revamp their standards. This usually happens because a role is too good to turn down (such as Gwyneth Paltrow in Shakespeare in Love) or because their career is starting to tank (Halle Berry in Swordfish), but whatever their reason, almost every year gives us a couple of these examples.
Most recently, we can look to Scarlett Johansson and Sarah Silverman are two actresses who most thought we’d never see nude on film but who decided that a role requiring them to be in their buff was worth crossing that invisible line. As we approach 2016, we take a look at the latest group of women, some who are new to the list and some who have been on it for years, that we’re still holding out hope will find that perfect part and drop their drawers for it.
10. Emma Watson
Since she’s become of legal age, Emma Watson has been at the top of most guy’s wish lists when it comes to willingness to drop clothing for a role. After a decade of playing Hermione Granger in the eight Harry Potter movies, Watson showed she had some range with roles in The Perks of Being a Wallflower and The Bling Ring, opening her up to a world of fans who weren’t of the fantasy book genre variety. Watson has a busy film schedule over the next two years, and she seems to be aligning herself with a variety of international women’s’ rights organizations, but we’re crossing our fingers the artist in her will stumble upon a role in the near future that necessitates a pile of her clothing on the floor.
9. Krysten Ritter
While some photos of Ritter did leak in the large celebrity photo scandal almost two years ago, we don’t think that violating someone’s privacy is a cool thing. To this point, the star of hit Netflix series Jessica Jones has opted to not do nude scenes, but she’s also seemed to be content with playing the best friend, wacky neighbor or quirky girlfriend in the projects she’s chosen. Jessica Jones has shown Ritter is ready for more serious, leading-lady roles for the first time in her career. Ritter is both beautiful and clearly an excellent actress and she’s somebody we could be talking about for years to come. We just hope she won’t let roles requiring nudity pass her by. In fact, we hope she’ll start taking them as soon as possible.
8. Sarah Hyland
Modern Family won’t be on forever and if the quality of writing lately is any indication, it’s hopefully on its last legs. While the rest of the characters have devolved to one-note stereotypes, Hyland continues to give her character, Haley Dunphy, depth we wouldn’t have guessed when the show started years ago. Hyland may be as great an actress as Meryl Streep, but we’ll never know unless she starts doing different things. Ten years from now, she’s either going to be crossing her fingers hoping that she’s the nominee who wins the Oscar, or she’ll be at celebrity conventions signing photos for $20 a pop. Her ability in 2016 to branch away from Modern Family will be key to her Hollywood survival. Hyland showing us a new side, and with less clothes, will do wonders to eliminate type-casting when the show reaches its inevitable end.
7. Ronda Rousey
Now that she will never be seen as the most dominant human ever to engage in professional fighting, it’s time to figure out what’s next. Like Mike Tyson, she’s been dabbling around with appearances for the WWE and in Hollywood films. While her mythical aura is fading, she could still capitalize on it by doing a nude scene, and letting it be known she’s doing a nude scene in an upcoming movie when she’s promoting it. She’s already appeared in ESPN Magazine’s “The Body Issue” so she isn’t completely against dropping her clothes and she could always play the “strong, independent woman making her own choices” card.
6. Victoria Justice
There are the girls who have had their own Disney Channel or NIckelodeon shows as teenagers who go onto huge careers, like Miley Cyrus, Demi Lovato and Ariana Grande. Then there are the ones who looked like they were going to, but didn’t, such as Miranda Cosgrove, Jamie Lynn Spears and Amanda Bynes. Victoria Justice is in that gray area in the middle where she’s either going to have to commit to cheesy Lifetime Network movies, a world away from the spotlight or doing what she needs to do to get to the next level. Hollywood is full of good looking women in their early 20s. Justice has a minor name and it won’t last much longer. A willingness to show some flesh will create the buzz her career may need to have any longevity.
5. Jenna Coleman
There are not a lot of women on this list who have done nude scenes in the past, but Coleman, best known for her recent multi-year run on Doctor Who as companion Clara Oswald, did a couple of scenes before rising to fame on the British science fiction series. Since the show returned almost a decade ago, there have been several actresses who have played the companion role. The one who has got the most work, Billie Piper, has been open to nude scenes in her work, most notably in Diary of a Call Girl. Coleman is a decent actress who needs to show she isn’t just a hyper time-traveling middle school teacher. A serious role with some serious nudity would probably help.
4. Mila Kunis
Kunis is one of those women whose career it seems can’t be killed. Her most notable work was as part of an ensemble in a television show that ended almost 10 years ago, small roles in a couple of movies, the Jim Beam spokeswoman and as Mrs. Ashton Kutcher. She’s set for life if she never wants to work again, but the fact she won’t go away seems to mean she wants to stay in the spotlight. She’s allowed herself to be portrayed as the sexy, yet exotic, girl next door who would never actually show anything. If she wanted to break that stereotype and try new things, her best first step would be to show that her lack of nudity is a trait she’s not clutching to anymore.
3. Alison Brie
There was a time a few years ago when Alison Brie looked like she was on the cusp of being the next big female actress in Hollywood. She had high-profile supporting roles in both Mad Men and Community, shows with devoted fan bases which helped her display her range from 1960s suppressed housewife to modern-day college geek. Both shows faded away and she’s been taking small roles in movies, but as a 32-year-old woman, she’s too old to be the hot young thing and too young to yet be considered a serious actress. We’d advise the Kate Winslet route by doing nude scenes in serious films to show her acting chops while also showing she has a lot of time left in playing the role of beautiful woman.
2. Melissa Benoist
Melissa Benoist bounced around Hollywood, doing guest starring spots on shows like Law and Order and The Good Wife before landing a regular gig during the last couple seasons of Glee. Whereas a lot of that musical cast will probably never been seen again, Benoist was quick to follow-up with a bunch of small roles in indie films and getting the biggest break of her career, as the title character in ABC’s Supergirl. Ratings have been good, so it looks like Benoist will have a job to go to in the morning for the foreseeable future, but depending on her career goals and the fact she has the sci-fi comic-con crowd in the palm of her hand, 2016 may be the right time to do her first nude scene. She’s certainly beautiful and has both acting and singing chops. Establishing that she isn’t against nudity for the right project might put move her to the front of the line for a lot of what Hollywood has planned over the next few years.
1. Jennifer Love Hewitt
It’s been 20 years since Jennifer Love Hewitt was introduced to the world on Party of Five and I Know What You Did Last Summer and it’s been 20 years that men have been hoping she’d choose a role that finally involved no clothing. Hewitt has never been one to be overly modest, with revealing roles in Heartbreakers and Shortcut To Happiness, but she’s never gone all the way, including reportedly turning down Playboy at one point. As she approaches 40 it’s clear she’s never going to need to do a nude scene for a long-lasting career, but at this point, can’t she just do it as a way of saying thank you to her fans?
