10 Hottest Viral Rap Music Videos of 2014

2014 is probably the year that Hip-Hop went more mainstream and viral than ever before. No doubt about it, Hip-Hop culture has become an unavoidable facet of popular culture. It’s a trend that’s only going to get bigger as we proceed into the new year. There were a lot of catchy Hip-Hop songs released in 2014. Most of them had a lot of gloss, but sadly not too much substance. Nowadays, it’s all about radio play and how many views a song can accrue on YouTube. In the following article, we list 10 of the biggest viral hits this year. A few of them were by well-known artists in the industry, but a lot also came our way via new artists like Bobby Shmurda representing Brooklyn and Dej Loaf (from Detroit). Take a look; perhaps one of your favorite Hip-Hop songs this year made the list.

Bobby Shmurda – Hot N***a

2014 will go down as the year that featured some of the quickest rises (and falls) in Hip-Hop History. One of those stories belongs to the Brooklyn rapper Bobby Shmurda. He exploded on the scene during the latter summer months with an explosive street single called “Hot Ni**a.” The video featured Bobby and his GS9 crew in a rowdy, guerrilla-style clip and they also debuted a dance called the Shmoney that went completely viral. Everybody was doing it and he even performed on The Tonight Show with Jimmy Fallon. Funny enough, just a few weeks ago, cops raided a studio that Shmurda was recording in with his crew and they found over 10 guns on the people present. They found an additional two guns and crack cocaine in Shmurda’s car and he‘s being held on $2 million bail for weapons charges and being linked to a series of shootings – Wow!

Coco – OT Genasis

Honestly, Hip-Hop has really changed. There was a time when lyrics, skills and true authenticity mattered, but not anymore. Nowadays, it’s all about producing the catchiest song and racking up as much airplay and You Tube Hits as possible. Rapper OT Genasis is affiliated with Busta Rhymes and he released a song this year called “Coco” that really exemplifies this new trend. The “coco” here refers to cocaine and not hot chocolate in case you were wondering. The chorus of the song has the rapper singing, “I’m in love with the Coco” over and over again, and it was catchy enough for the masses to latch on to it. It’s been a major hit for him and the video has over 30 million hits on YouTube.

Big Sean – IDFWU

The young Detroit rapper Big Sean has had quite a year. Not only did he break up his engagement with the hot Glee actress, Naya Rivera, but he started a new high-profile relationship too. He’s currently hooked up with one of the hottest pop starlets in the game right now, Ariana Grande. He also found time to release some new music and one of his new songs ended up being a viral hit called “I Don’t F*** with You” or abbreviated to “IDFWU.” The video featured appearances from Kanye West and DJ Mustard, and he even dropped some lines in the song about “dodging a bullet from a crazy bit*h.” Of course he was referring toNaya Rivera. It probably wasn’t the most amicable of break-ups. To date, the song’s video has 16 million views on YouTube, and it’s a great set-up for his new album dropping in 2015.

DJ Khaled – Hold You Down

When it comes to producing group cuts featuring tons of urban music stars, there’s no one better at doing it than the Miami-based DJ Khaled. This year he showed his skill again by releasing a star-studded single called “Hold You Down” featuring Chris Brown, August Alsina, Future & Jeremih. Khaled also happens to be the king of strategic product placement and throughout the video, he makes it a point to showcase his new headphone collaboration with Bang & Olufsen. There is also a hilarious part of the video where he hands a girl stacks of money because she’s been “loyal” to him. Pure comedy – this guy is a real entertainer. To date the video has received over 36 million views on Vevo.

Nicki Minaj – Anaconda

When Nicki Minaj was gearing up to release her new album earlier this year, she knew she needed a sexy single that would pierce all facets of popular culture. The song she chose was “Anaconda” and it featured a sample of the unforgettable Sir Mix A Lot track, “Baby Got Back.” The video for this song was a seductive and lustful twerk-fest featuring Nicki and a host of thick voluptuous dancers shaking their derrieres to the thumping beat. Nicki isn’t afraid to sell sex at all, because she knows that in the end, it all transfers into dollars in her bank account. The video for “Anaconda” was a huge viral hit and it’s been seen over 344 million times on her YouTube Vevo account.

 Iggy Azalea – Fancy

One of the biggest songs this year was by none other than the Australian implant Iggy Azalea. The song was “Fancy” featuring Charlie XCX, and it was a mega smash. You couldn’t go anywhere this summer with the song blaring from speakers on almost every corner. The song got her nominated for a Grammy and she was even invited to perform it on Saturday Night Live. If people doubted her before, they can’t doubt her now. She is certainly one of the top 3 female rap artists on the scene currently. You want to know just how popular the video for “Fancy” was? Well, to date it has over 405 million views on Vevo. Now that’s pretty amazing!

OG Maco – B*t*h You Guessed It

There’s a new category of Hip-Hop that has emerged lately called “Turn Up.” With this new scene, it’s all about having beats that shake and rattle the speakers and lyrics aren’t really that important to the overall song. One of the rappers really riding this new wave of music is the young Atlanta upstart named OG Maco. He can be described as southern version of DMX (when the Yonkers rapper was first starting out). OG Maco brings a lot of energy and passion to his performances and the fans love it. This year he had a viral hit called “Bit*h You Guessed It.” It’s simple, straight to the point, and has a banging beat. Since the video’s release, it has notched over 16 million views on YouTube.

Dej Loaf – Try Me

Detroit is known for producing some of the most enduring Hip-Hop talent around. Artists like Eminem, J. Dilla, Big Sean, Royce da 5’9” and Black Milk all hail from the motor city, and this year we were introduced to yet another upcoming star from the city called Dej Loaf. The diminutive, pint-sized female emcee emerged on the scene this year with a smooth-sounding track called “Try Me.” The great thing about this song is that it sounded so cool and laid back, but her lyrics were so street-influenced and hardcore. No one really saw her coming but the masses loved the song. Before she knew it, she had a certified viral hit on her hands. To date the video for “Try Me” has over 11 million views and she’s even performed the song on Jimmy Fallon’sTonight Show.

Rae Sremmurd – No Type

Do you remember the group Kris Kross from back in the day? Well there’s a 2014 version of that group hailing from Mississippi called Rae Sremmurd. They are a duo of young Hip-Hop kids signed to the label of mega-star Hip-Hop producer Mike Will Made It. For those who are not familiar, Mike Will was one of the major producers on Miley Cyrus’s Bangerz album. But back to Rae Sremmurd, they have had a great 2014. They had a hit during the summer called “No Flex Zone,” and they followed that up with another major smash called “NoType.” To date, the track “No Type” has reached over 76 million views on YouTube. These young rappers are going to be huge in 2014.

ILOVEMAKONNEN – Tuesday

Sometimes in Hip-Hop, all you need is to have perfect timing and have the right people notice and acknowledge your music. That’s exactly what happened with an Atlanta Hip-Hop artist named ILOVEMAKONNEN this year. He had a catchy single called “Tuesday” which had a sing-along hook and unique concept. The song was about partying on Tuesday night and not having to wait till the weekend to hit the clubs. Luckily for him, the song caught the attention of Toronto Hip-Hop star Drake and he jumped on the track for a remix. That was the magic dust he needed and the song instantly caught fire. ILOVEMAKONNEN was signed to Drake’s OVO label and the song has gone to become a radio staple for the last several months. To date, the video for “Tuesday” featuring Drake has over 31 million views on YouTube.
