You may not know Emily Ratajkowski by name, but you probably know her face and, err, other parts of her body. The gorgeous brunette became huge for her role in the “Blurred Lines” video, in which she dances around in the buff, because everyone who looks remotely like her naked should always dance around in the buff.
After film roles in such movies as Gone Girl, We Are Your Friends and Entourage, it’s safe to say that Emily successfully made the leap from hot model to film actress, a feat that can be difficult, even for a woman as completely stunning as she is.
Emily tends to stay in the media due to the fact that she is outspoken about her views about feminism, Bernie Sanders, and Kim Kardashian’s selfies. Some of the things she’s said and done have faced harsh criticism, like the time that she took a selfie with Kim K in the name of feminism. While you may not agree with everything she does, Emily Ratajkowski is here for good, people, and we better just get used to it. Though, I’m not sure who would really have a problem with Emily sticking around. I mean, look at her.
Below are 15 things you or may not have know about the stunning model-turned-actress. At the end of this article, you’ll be very well educated on the subject of hottie Emily Ratajkowski.
15. Her Character In Gone Girl Is Described As “An Alien F**k-Doll Of A Girl”
I mean, that’s one way to describe her, I guess. More or less, the role of her character, Ben Affleck‘s character’s mistress, is to be in contrast to his wife, played by Rosamund Pike. While his wife is a blue-blooded elegant ice-queen, Emily’s character was much more Earthy and less put together.
After being topless in Gone Girl and the infamous “Blurred Lines” video, Emily says she is done with being cast as the hot girl. Unfortunately, Hollywood doesn’t seem done with casting her in their hot girl roles, but when you’re as hot as Emily, it makes sense that they would want to use that. She’s often hearing that she is “too pretty” for the interesting roles in which she’d like to be cast. She insists that, “I’m taking a long and, I hope, high road of basically waiting for the parts that I’m most excited about, which can be really… annoying.”
14. She Signed With Ford Models At 14
Generally, at 14 years old, girls are hitting that awkward stage in life but not Emily. At just 14 years old, she signed with Ford Models. The international company is one of the most esteemed agencies in the fashion industry, having represented such superstars as Christie Brinkley, Twiggy and Elle Macpherson. After signing, Emily went on to book some print advertisement work with Khol’s and Nordstrom. Of course, those would be tiny gigs compared to what was in store for her.
13. Her First Appearance Was On iCarly
Considering the fact that she’s an international sex symbol, it’s odd that she first appeared on the children’s show iCarly, but then again, we’ve seen tons of super hot celebs launched from a children’s show. Selena Gomez, anyone? She appeared in two episodes as Tasha, the girlfriend of Noah Munck’s character. Something tells us he was probably thrilled to get to work with her. This was simply practice for her before being cast in the blockbuster Gone Girl, directed by David Fincher.
12. She’s Considered A Social Media Supermodel
The fashion industry has certainly been shaken up by social media. The new wave of social media models has taken the industry by storm and it shows no sign of stopping. Luckily for Emily, she seems to be in this class of young models with millions of followers. Both Kendall Jenner and Gigi Hadid are two of the biggest names in the fashion industry, posing for most men’s magazines as well as for high-end publications. Their millions and millions of followers have helped catapult them to the top, though they have faced some harsh criticism for this. While Emily doesn’t have the social media following of Kendall or Gigi (not many people do) she has a steady following of over 6 million followers on Instagram alone. I mean, she’s constantly posting photos like the above so it’s easy to see why so many people are following her.
11. Studied Art At UCLA
Wouldn’t it be so easy to just consider her an insanely hot girl and that’s all? Well, Emily is smarter than that stereotype. Even though she dropped out and is in demand in Hollywood, she still paints and draws today. She claims to have dropped out for several reasons, the first being that the art world is “insanely elitist and full of bullshit.” Way to tell us how you really feel, Emily. She also felt like an outsider at UCLA, claiming that all of her roommates were blonde sorority girls. I’d say she’s successful for someone who left college early, but also with her face and her body, she was destined to make it in Hollywood.
10. She Was Born In England And Vacationed At Nude Beaches
Emily was born in London to two American parents. She was, however, raised in California, where her upbringing was about as liberal as you could get. When she was born, her mother (39) and father (45) were unmarried. Her mother is a professor of English and described by Emily as “feminist and intellectual.” Her father is an art teacher. She grew up without a TV and was exposed more so to art and literature. Oh, also her parents would take her on vacations to nude beaches so one can guess that’s where she got comfortable with the human form.
9. She Was Also In A Maroon 5 Video
She might be known as the girl from the “Blurred Lines” music video, but it was not her first video. Before “Blurred Lines”, she appeared in a music video for “Love Somebody” by Maroon 5. In this video, Emily played Adam Levine‘s love interest. He covers her in blue paint. It’s cool for sure, but the “Blurred Lines” video definitely left a bit more of an impression to the masses. For now, Emily says that she’s steering clear of music video and concentrating on her film career. Well, you gotta cut the cord sometime.
8. She Originally Turned Down “Blurred Lines”
This may surprise a few people because it is basically what launched her career, but originally she turned down the offer to be in “Blurred Lines”. Having read the proposal for the video, she wasn’t sure how an idea like that would turn out, so she turned it down. It was only after meeting with the director that she finally accepted the role. Apparently, she hit if off with the director and with that trust, finally felt comfortable enough to do the video. Considering it launched her career, we’re going to say it was a pretty good move.
7. Her Spread In Treats! Changed Her Life
You may have thought that the first time Emily appeared in a state of undress was in “Blurred Lines” but you’d be wrong. The model appeared in a very risqué spread in Treats! Apparently, it was this spread that landed her the “Blurred Lines” video, which catapulted her career. After seeing that video, supposedly David Fincher said he wanted the girl from the “Blurred Lines” video for Gone Girl, so without Treats! none of the rest of it would have happened.
6. She’s A Bernie Sanders Supporter
While many women in Hollywood have hopped on the Hilary train, Emily has openly supported Bernie and has even introduced him at a rally earlier this year. Well, since this race got more heated than usual, people did not react with smiles. Instead, she was attacked for being a model and “mindless beauty.” People also attacked her for her previous modeling, leaving comments such as “leave politics to people who are educated and show us your t**s,” because apparently you cannot be intelligent if you’d ever shown your chest. So, the reactions to her being an active supporter of Bernie were a bit harsh. Let the girl live, right?
5. She Penned A Lenny Letter About Sexuality
Earlier this year, Emily penned an article for Lenny Letter, Lena Dunham’s blog for women. In it, she discussed growing up as a “baby woman,” you know being essentially a child but having the breasts of a woman, which is what she experienced after developing at a young age. The article goes on to criticize the way in which our society sexualizes women. Considering the fact that Emily is a sex symbol, she had much to say on the subject.
4. She Is A Feminist
Feminism can be for gorgeous, sexy women who like to show off their bodies, and that is exactly who Emily Ratajkowski is. While the model has appeared in the buff quite a few times, it doesn’t mean she doesn’t consider herself a feminist, because she totally does. Of course, some have highly debated her feminism, pointing out that she’s revealed quite a lot of herself in a number of men’s magazines. She believes that sexuality is fun and if you are in control, it’s empowering. Some may consider her photos differently but it’s her version of feminism.
3. She’s A Spokesperson For Planned Parenthood
By now, you’ve hopefully realized that there is a lot more to Emily Ratajkowski than meets the eye. When she cares about something, she will stand up for it, and one of the things she cares about is Planned Parenthood. The model even filmed a video in which she addresses women and talks about the ways in which Planned Parenthood supports them by making birth control free and available to all women. You’ve got to hand it to Planned Parenthood for getting Emily to be a spokesperson. I mean, just looking at her brings the act of sex to mind, so you might as well have her discussing sex and Planned Parenthood.
2. She’s A Friend Of Kim K Apparently
Remember when everyone was really mad at Kim Kardashian for posting a nude selfie? I know you’re probably think “which time?” Kim K isn’t too shy about what pictures she posts of herself and you may love her or hate her for that. In March 2016, Kim posted a very explicit photo of herself with black boxes covering very little. Celebrities seemed to take one of two sides. Either they believed that Kim was not being a good role model for young woman and shouldn’t have posted such a photo, or they believed that being sexually empowered is healthy and applauded Kim. Emily, who has appeared in the buff quite a few times herself, was in the camp of supporting Kim. In support, Emily also posted a sexy selfie of herself with an empowering caption. Kim sent her flowers and then the two met up in a bathroom somewhere and took their clothes off for a selfie together. No, seriously, that’s more or less how it went down.
1. You’re Pronouncing Her Name Wrong
Okay, so this might not be shocking, but it also kind of is. The ‘J’ in her last name is totally silent. Have you been saying her name wrong inside your head the whole time you read this article? Tell the truth! You probably were. If anything though, having one less letter to pronounce when it comes to her name is kind of a relief. I mean, it’s a bit of a mouthful.
Lastly, we’ll leave you with this quote from Max Joseph, the director of We Are Your Friends. He choose to cast her instead of over 100 girls who were up for the role of the love interest of Zac Efron. Joseph said he choose to cast her because, “She is very intelligent and she’s very well-read, and she’s also the girl who was in the ‘Blurred Lines’ video. And I think that we don’t naturally put those two things together. The fact that she can pull both off with maximum integrity is very bizarre. It’s bizarre, but incredible at the same time.”
I think that sums of Emily Ratajkowski pretty well, right?
