The Harry Potter series became one of the biggest cultural phenomena in modern entertainment. Millions of readers first discovered the magical world through J.K. Rowling’s books before following Harry, Hermione, Ron and their friends onto the big screen.
Across eight movies, audiences watched the young cast grow from child actors into some of the most recognizable performers of their generation. At the same time, a remarkable group of established British actors brought Hogwarts, the Ministry of Magic and the wizarding world to life.
Years after the final movie reached theaters, fans naturally began wondering what happened to the actors behind their favorite characters. Some continued building impressive acting careers, others explored directing, charity work or completely different creative pursuits, while several beloved performers sadly passed away.
So, where are the Harry Potter stars now? Let's take a nostalgic look at 14 memorable members of the cast and see what they were doing after their time at Hogwarts.
14. Fred and George Weasley
Fred and George Weasley may not have been members of the central trio, but their humor, confidence and endless schemes made them unforgettable parts of the Harry Potter story. The mischievous twins were played by real-life brothers James and Oliver Phelps.
Oliver Phelps, who is 13 minutes older than James, continued making occasional appearances after the franchise concluded. Outside acting, he also focused on his personal life and other interests. His brother James remained active in entertainment, appearing in several productions, including the long-running British television drama Silent Witness.
The Phelps brothers became so closely associated with Fred and George that it is difficult to imagine the Weasley twins being played by anyone else.
13. Argus Filch
Few people at Hogwarts were as devoted to enforcing school rules as Argus Filch. The grumpy caretaker was constantly searching for students breaking the rules, often accompanied by his equally memorable cat, Mrs. Norris.
Filch was played by veteran British actor David Bradley, whose career stretches far beyond the wizarding world. Even before joining Harry Potter, Bradley had built an extensive résumé in British television and theater.
Following his appearances as Filch, Bradley continued to find work in major film and television productions. His credits included Captain America: The First Avenger, The Strain and the hugely successful series Game of Thrones.
Unlike some of the younger members of the Potter cast, Bradley already had decades of experience when he arrived at Hogwarts, and he continued putting that experience to good use after the franchise ended.
12. Dudley Dursley
The Dursley family was hardly a favorite among Harry Potter fans. Harry's spoiled cousin Dudley, his strict parents Vernon and Petunia, and their treatment of Harry made them some of the most frustrating characters in the story.
Fiona Shaw, who played Aunt Petunia, was already a highly respected actress before appearing in the Potter films. After the franchise, she continued developing an impressive career across film, television and theater.
Richard Griffiths brought Uncle Vernon to life with plenty of bluster and comic frustration. The acclaimed actor had enjoyed a long and distinguished career before Harry Potter. Sadly, Griffiths died in 2013, only a short time after the final Potter movie was released. His later credits included Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides.
Harry Melling, meanwhile, went through one of the most noticeable transformations among the younger cast members. After playing Dudley, he moved beyond the character and continued working in television, film and other acting projects.
11. Lord Voldemort
Few villains in modern fantasy are as recognizable as Lord Voldemort. Ralph Fiennes brought a chilling combination of menace and theatrical intensity to the role, turning the Dark Lord into one of the franchise's most memorable figures.
Fiennes was already a highly respected performer before joining Harry Potter, with acclaimed movies such as Schindler's List and The English Patient among his earlier work. He went on to maintain a remarkably busy career after the Potter films.
Among his post-Potter appearances were major productions including the James Bond movies Skyfall and Spectre, as well as Wrath of the Titans, The Grand Budapest Hotel and Hail, Caesar!.
Although Voldemort was arguably one of his darkest roles, Fiennes continued demonstrating his versatility across drama, comedy and blockbuster cinema.
10. Professor McGonagall
Professor Minerva McGonagall was strict, intelligent and fiercely protective of her students. Maggie Smith's performance gave the character an unforgettable combination of authority, wit and warmth.
By the time Smith joined the Harry Potter cast, she was already one of Britain's most celebrated actresses. Her career had spanned decades and included movies, television and theater, earning her numerous major awards and international recognition.
Smith continued working successfully after the Potter franchise. One of her most celebrated later performances came in the television series Downton Abbey, where she played the sharp-tongued Dowager Countess Violet Crawley.
Her work outside acting has also been noteworthy. Smith has supported charitable causes and organizations, demonstrating that her influence extends well beyond the screen.
9. Hagrid
Rubeus Hagrid was one of the warmest and most lovable figures in the entire Harry Potter universe. The enormous Hogwarts gamekeeper may have looked intimidating, but his kindness and loyalty quickly made him a fan favorite.
Scottish actor Robbie Coltrane was responsible for bringing Hagrid to life. Before Potter, Coltrane was already a highly respected performer and comedian with an extensive career in British entertainment.
Following the Potter movies, Coltrane continued appearing in film and television. He also lent his voice to the animated adventure Brave and appeared in the 2012 adaptation of Great Expectations, sharing the screen with several of his Potter colleagues.
Hagrid remains one of Coltrane's most beloved roles, and his performance helped make the half-giant a central part of the emotional heart of the series.
8. Professor Snape
Severus Snape was one of the most complicated characters in the entire series. Cold, intimidating and often seemingly hostile toward Harry, Snape gradually became a character whose motivations were far more complicated than they first appeared.
Alan Rickman gave the character his distinctive voice, mannerisms and unforgettable presence. His performance became one of the defining elements of the movie franchise.
Rickman had already enjoyed an extraordinary career in film and theater before joining Harry Potter. He was also a respected member of the Royal Shakespeare Company and had performed in numerous stage productions.
After the Potter series, Rickman appeared in films including CBGB and A Little Chaos, in which he played King Louis XIV. Sadly, Rickman died in January 2016 at the age of 69, leaving behind an enormous body of work and millions of admirers around the world.
For many fans, his portrayal of Snape remains one of the greatest performances in the entire franchise.
7. Neville Longbottom
Few Harry Potter actors experienced a transformation as widely discussed as Matthew Lewis. Neville Longbottom began the series as a shy, awkward and frequently nervous student, but eventually emerged as one of the story's most courageous characters.
As the movies progressed, Lewis also underwent a dramatic physical transformation, surprising fans who had watched him grow up on screen. His appearance attracted considerable attention, but his acting career continued to develop as well.
After Harry Potter, Lewis appeared in several television projects and films, including the thriller The Rise. He also continued performing on stage and became involved with charitable work.
Neville's journey from an uncertain young student to a courageous hero remains one of the most satisfying character arcs in the entire franchise.
6. Luna Lovegood
Luna Lovegood was unlike almost anyone else at Hogwarts. Her dreamy personality, unusual beliefs and unwavering confidence made her one of the most distinctive characters in the series.
Evanna Lynch won the role after competing against thousands of other hopefuls. Remarkably, Luna became her breakthrough acting role, and she continued working in entertainment after the Potter films ended.
Lynch also became involved in charitable and advocacy work. She supported organizations connected with causes important to her and used her public platform to discuss topics including body image and social equality.
Her performance as Luna helped turn a relatively unusual character from the books into one of the most memorable members of the Hogwarts cast.
5. Draco Malfoy
Draco Malfoy was Harry Potter's arrogant school rival and one of the most recognizable students in Slytherin House. Tom Felton played the character throughout the film series, becoming strongly associated with the role.
Felton actually had acting experience before Harry Potter. He had appeared in commercials and other productions from a young age, meaning that the Potter movies were not his first experience in front of a camera.
The success of the franchise made Felton internationally famous, but he continued pursuing other projects between and after the Potter films. His later work included movies such as Risen and a variety of television and film appearances.
Felton also explored music and other creative interests, demonstrating that his career was about much more than simply playing the blond-haired Slytherin student.
4. Ginny Weasley
Ginny Weasley started out as Ron's shy younger sister, but her role became much more important as the story developed. Bonnie Wright grew alongside the character and eventually portrayed Ginny as a confident young witch and Harry's love interest.
After completing the Harry Potter films, Wright continued her education and earned a degree before expanding her career beyond acting. She appeared in productions including After the Dark and continued exploring creative work behind the camera.
Wright developed interests in directing, producing and screenwriting, and she also worked on music-video projects. Her post-Potter career showed that she was interested in exploring different aspects of the entertainment industry rather than remaining tied exclusively to acting.
3. Ron Weasley
Ron Weasley was Harry's loyal best friend and one of the emotional anchors of the story. Rupert Grint's natural humor helped make Ron one of the most popular characters in the franchise.
Unlike some of his co-stars, Grint did not have a long list of major screen credits before joining Harry Potter. The role transformed him into an international star while he was still a child.

Daniel Radcliffe became one of the world's most recognizable young actors when he was cast as Harry Potter. However, the wizarding franchise was not actually his first acting experience. He had already appeared as the young David Copperfield in the television adaptation of David Copperfield before taking on the role that would define his childhood.
Playing Harry Potter for more than a decade gave Radcliffe enormous international fame, but he was determined to prove that he could move beyond the character. After the franchise ended, he deliberately chose a wide variety of projects across film, television and theater.
One of his notable post-Potter movies was the supernatural thriller The Woman in Black, followed by projects such as Horns. He also developed a strong reputation for stage performances, taking on roles that were very different from the young wizard audiences had grown up watching.
Radcliffe has also supported charitable causes and spoken publicly about social issues. His career after Harry Potter has demonstrated that the actor behind the famous scar and glasses was determined to build an identity far beyond Hogwarts.
For an entire generation of fans, however, Daniel Radcliffe will always have a special place in their memories as Harry Potter — the boy who entered Hogwarts and took millions of viewers along with him on an unforgettable magical journey.
