15 Behind The Scenes Secrets About The Keeping Up With The Kardashians

If you only knew the crazy secrets and schemes that go on behind the scenes of Keeping Up With The Kardashians. Sure, we know that a lot about this famous family is totally fake, but they have made a killing off of their wacky endeavors and silly catfights. If you have ever wondered about what goes on when the cameras are off, or just how messed up this TV family is, then you need to check out our list of 15 behind the scenes secrets about Keeping Up With The Kardashians. These tidbits and insider secrets will blow your mind and make you rethink everything about the Kardashian family. From how much they make per episode, to how they treat their production crew, to how the lighting has to be just so…these are some of the secrets that you might not have thought about.

It turns out that the production crew makes a pretty penny for their work with the Kardashians, even if they get treated like garbage. It’s all in a day’s work for these people! That being said, the production crew definitely has their favorite Kardashian, but can you guess who it is? What about the one who is always working as the comic relief while everyone else is arguing on set? And what does it take for a Kardashian to get a bonus on their already astronomical salary per episode? You will learn all that and more with our secretive list of Kardashian insider info!

15. Only Kris Can Review Taped Footage

Yep, Kris Jenner is the alpha female on the set of Keeping Up With The Kardashians. Not even Kim is permitted to review episode footage! If Kris watches the footage and finds something that she’s unhappy with, all she has to do is say the word and the producers will take that content out of the episode. So now whenever you watch an episode of Keeping Up With The Kardashians, just remember that is it Kardashian-filmed, and Kris-approved! We don’t know if the terms of the contract will change anytime soon, but since things have been like this for years now, we suspect that Kim, Kourtney, and the rest of the gang are okay with Kris being the mom in charge. Even so, we still think it’s a bit odd that Kris would allow so many ridiculous Kardashian stunts to be ok’d and shown to the public. Anything for fame, right?

14. Scott And Kourtney Didn’t Fight As Often As You’d Think

Sure, the two decided to call it splits not too long ago, but apparently, the production crew wanted to instigate some fights between Kourtney and Scott Disick. Some episodes of Keeping Up With The Kardashians are exclusive to Scott and Kourtney arguments, but some of them might have been super fake! It wouldn’t be the first time we thought something about the Kardashian clan was phony. We actually find it kind of sad that Kourtney and Scott were encouraged to fight and meddle with each other so much, maybe their marriage could have been a happier one if it weren’t for that. Even so, it seems like the two of them didn’t care too much, and they would even burst out in giggles sometimes when they were filming a scene in which they were arguing. How bizarre! Try watching some episodes and trying to spot the fake fights and temper tantrums.

13. The House Is Fake

Well, the shot that the production crew shows of the house’s exterior is fake. It’s a house, but it isn’t necessarily the house in which the Kardashian-Jenner family lives. Sorry, but they want to keep things someone safe and private from viewers, especially those that might try to stalk the family. We do know that the family lives in Calabasas, California, and they’re often telling us about cool places to go around town. Even their boutique (Dash) is located in Calabasas. Still, the exact house shot is not shown on television out of respect for the family’s security. Don’t worry though, the Kardashians are bound to live in a humongous castle of a house that is equipped with the latest technology and entertainment. If you live on the East Coast, don’t worry. You can still get a taste of the Kardashians because they opened a second Dash boutique in Miami Beach, Florida.

12. Kim And Kris Ask For Lots Of Retakes

While these two Kardashian ladies are often going through the same scene 4 times, the production crew doesn’t seem to mind it. In fact, an insider said that Kim is the one Kardashian who has stayed the same since the first season of Keeping Up With The Kardashians, and she is the nicest to the crew. Even if she does ask for retakes for almost every single scene (like her mom) the production crew thinks that Kim and Kris are the top two Kardashians with the best acting chops. In fact, sometimes these two have to redo a scene to fake being bad at acting! We don’t know how much we believe that one, but hey, we’re glad to hear that not every Kardashian is a big meanie just because they have lots of riches and fame. We don’t think anyone could be harder to work with than Scott Disick though!

11. Kris Humphries Wasn’t That Bad

Remember when Kim Kardashian was married to Kris Humphries for like, a second? The marriage just didn’t work out (naturally,) but the producers of the show wanted to play that up to garner more viewers for Keeping Up With The Kardashians. In any of the episodes in which Kris Humphries appeared or was talked about, the producers wanted to depict him in the worst light possible. Needless to say, a whole lot of editing and such had to be done in order to clip out any dialogue or footage that made Kris look like an okay guy. Even the Kardashians had to be careful to use language that reflected disdain and a “tsk tsk” attitude towards Kris. Poor guy…but that’s what you get for quickly marrying and divorcing a Kardashian, especially Kim Kardashian! The truth is, this isn’t the only thing that’s super-scripted about Keeping Up With The Kardashians.

10. Ten People Pick And Choose Scenes To Make An Episode

Just to clear that up a bit more: the Kardashians are usually surrounded by some ten people for each scene, so there is a lot of action going on. There may be just Kim or Kourtney in a particular scene, but there could be a whole mob of people filming it from different angles. Different people in the production crew get different types of footage, so it is someone’s lucky job to go through all of that content and pick and choose what will go into that scene in that single episode. And then it has to get the viewing and approval of Kris Jenner herself, so this is quite a bit of work that goes into just one snippet of a Keeping Up With The Kardashians episode. This is why there are sometimes continuity errors in the show, and some viewers have actually made it a game to spot the errors and post them online for fun.

9. Yes, The Crew Pretty Much Lives With Them

In case you were wondering whether the camera crew on Keeping Up With The Kardashians ever gets a break, the answer is NO. Not really, anyway. Kris (and probably everyone else) likes to have at least someone from the camera crew at their home almost all the time because there are always so many zany ideas popping out of a Kardashian’s head. Kris wouldn’t want the crew or producers to miss anything, so the rest of the family has just come to terms with the fact that they are constantly bombarded with cameras. Creepy! Most celebs want their homes to be a place of refuge and solace from the paparazzi, but the Kardashians seem to be perfectly okay with inviting their camera crew in at all hours of the day and night. Hey, it probably helped them capture some pretty crazy footage for the show, but talk about dedication to your work.

8. The Production Crew Leaks Certain Materials

If you’ve ever noticed similar story arcs or references that were made at different points in the series or within a season of Keeping Up With The Kardashians, then you may actually be onto something. It turns out that the production crew can be a bit sneaky at times, and they will add stuff into an episode that may have nothing to do with that particular episode. The added content may be instead referencing something further along in the season, and viewers who pay enough attention may be able to follow the story arc throughout the season. This just goes to show that a lot of what the Kardashians do on their show is very scripted. Maybe their wacky behavior and dialogue aren’t totally planned out by the production crew, but multiple takes of the same scene, as well as invented scenarios and arguments, are often the work of the crew who is trying to get more action out of the Kardashian clan.

7. A Long-Lasting Crew

It takes a certain kind of person to be part of the production crew for Keeping Up With The Kardashians. In fact, these may be the only capable of putting up with the girls for so long. The crew has been the same group of people since the first season of the show, that started over a decade ago!

Even though the people have stayed the same, a lot of other elements of the production process have been altered or thrown away completely. Apparently, the Kardashians have gotten snobbier as their fame has increased. An inside source claimed that the production crew used to feel welcomed and on a friendly basis with the Kardashians. Now it’s more like the family is a bunch of slave drivers, ordering the production crew around. Yet the crew continues to stand there and tape the Kardashians, even as the girls spiral into notoriety for their wacky and insane shenanigans.

6. The Crew Makes Bank Though

While we don’t know just how much the folks on the production crew get paid, we do know that it’s a hefty chunk of change. Apparently, the E! Television network (which is the main airer of Keeping Up With The Kardashians) knows that this famous family is difficult to work with, let alone hang around for every waking moment. So everyone from the head of production to the small-time interns gets very nice compensation. Now we can better understand why these people keep working for the Kardashians. It must be a love of money that keeps them hanging on during all of the drama, the laughs, and the good, bad, and the ugly. While we couldn’t even think about signing up for this kind of job, we’re sure that there are plenty of people who would like to go fetch tea and McDonald’s for the Kardashian women, even if it means it might end up being thrown in their face.

5. The Kardashians’ Salaries Are Unfathomable

The life of a Kardashian must be so hard. They demand that the camera crews stay in their house at all hours, and then they both them around and get paid millions for just one episode. The salaries of the Kardashian women were revealed last year, and the numbers were staggering. Kris Jenner is the matriarch of the family, so it makes sense that she gets the most bang for her buck: $20 million per episode of Keeping Up With The Kardashians. Kim, the most famous of them all, gets $15 million per episode, but she gets a $5 million bonus every time Kanye West makes an appearance on the show. As for everyone else, they get a measly $10 million per episode, boohoo. It’s said that the girls get bonuses as well if they bring on a celebrity guest star. Kendall can get her model friends to make an appearance, and Kylie had Tyga under her thumb for a while.

4. Kim Uses A Tear Stick

Fans of Keeping Up With The Kardashians will notice that Kim tends to cry about things – a lot. Well, while Kim may be an overly dramatic person, she isn’t that much of a crybaby; the actress actually keeps a tear stick handy to help her get her cry on. Some people won’t care about the tear stick, because they love to see Kim’s cry face, as screwed up as it is. Yet other people have knocked down the Kardashians for their fakery, saying that they shouldn’t be faking stuff like that. Even the proposal and divorce between Kris Humphries and Kim Kardashian happened days or even weeks prior to being filmed on the Keeping Up With The Kardashians set. Kim and her family were outed in tabloids and gossip magazines a couple of years ago over this debacle, but that didn’t seem to affect their TV show’s ratings. People still come flocking to watch the series as well as the spin-offs.

3. The Lighting Must Be Right

If the camera crew wants to keep their jobs, then they better be sure to make Kris looks as good as possible. In order to give Kris the most appealing face for television, the lighting has to be just so and if the lighting is off by even a millimeter, Kris will throw that person out to the dogs. This is a fast and hard rule, and it’s even included in the contract. Everyone knows that Kris Jenner is to be filmed under the most attractive and forgiving light possible, so she is constantly looking for screw-ups when she reviews episode footage before allowing it to air on TV. Granted, Kris is the oldest of the women, so she has a bit of extra work to do to look as good as her gorgeous daughters. She just seems to care a bit more about making sure the lights are flooded onto her face so that she is flushed out and looks suitable for her TV moments.

2. Kim Never Lost Her Earring In Bora Bora

As Kris Jenner has said, about 90% of the stuff on Keeping Up With The Kardashians is utter bull, such as, Kim didn’t lose an earring in the pool during the family vacation to Bora Bora. Kris Humphries proposed to Kim several times so the production crew could get the best shot. Even the lead-up to the proposal was all planned and staged by Kim herself. So, is anything on the show real? Another pearl of wisdom from Kris Jenner: she could never totally script all of the drama and mayhem that happens in the Kardashian-Jenner family. The production crew and show writers don’t have to worry about running out of content, because everyone in the family is their own kind of crazy. This is why Kris wants someone at the house on a regular basis to catch whatever antic is going to be coming next. At least there is no doubt that the audience eats it up.

1. Khloe Is A Comic On Set

And a bit of a drunk as well! Khloe is usually the comic relief when everyone else is getting all hot and bothered on the set. And while Khloe may be the most self-conscious of the group, she has no reason to be. She also seems a bit more level-headed than some of her sisters, and she now has a smoking hot body to rival even Kim’s. Even so, Khloe is known for drinking a lot before filming a scene, and she claims that this helps her to loosen up and be more free and spontaneous during shooting. We wouldn’t recommend this practice to anyone, but coming from a Kardashian, we really aren’t that surprised! We can see how Khloe would be the one to jump in with a funny quip or joke when everyone else is arguing and getting antsy. She has a good way of easing the tension and infusing some humor into the situation.
