One of the most drastic things that you can do to change your overall physical appearance is modify your hair color. Not to mention it’s a heck of a lot easier to change your hairstyle than to lose 25 pounds. When you are an actress, you may often be asked to change your appearance for a role. As a result, some of the most beautiful women in the world have shown that they can pull off darn near any color under the sun. But as you’ll see, it’s not just actresses who modify their look. Katy Perry will show off that even when rocking purple hair, she’s still sexy enough to make the boys go Roar.
Below we have 15 of the most beautiful celebrities and photos of them pulling off different hair colors. There’s no doubt that looking at pictures of beautiful women is not torture, but just in case you want a bit more oomph, there are also some fun facts and notes about upcoming roles for some of the actresses below. Do you know which Game of Thrones star has an upcoming movie with Johnny Knoxville? Or how much money Rihanna was spending every week to keep herself looking fresh? Who is your favorite celebrity out there that can pull off multiple styles, did she make it below?
There’s only one way to find out!
15. Blake Lively
No matter what hair color Blake Lively decides to rock, that she’ll be pulling it off. The actress made her first big break into Hollywood as a dynamite blonde in Sisterhood of the Travelling Pants. Her hair got a bit darker for her the next role in 2006, for the comedy Accepted.
When asked about the hair style on the right, Lively’s stylist said “I twisted and braided small pieces and pinned them in and finished with hairspray.”
The ravishing red you see on the left is from 2011, when Lively was in the movie Hick. On the hair color, colorist Rona O’Connor said “Blake and I named this shade Fire Opal, after one of her favorite stones.”
While Blake Lively’s career has started to slow down now that she’s started a family with husband, Ryan Reynolds, she does have a film All I See Is You set to come out in the next year. Photos on set show Blake rocking the brunette hair, showing the actress truly can pull it all off.
14. Scarlett Johansson
Let’s be honest, it really doesn’t matter what color hair Scarlett Johannson has, she’s always going to be considered to be one of the most beautiful women in Hollywood. Scarlett Johansson was a blonde when she made her debut in 1994 for North, but when you get to don the red hair to portray Natasha Romanoff in The Avengers franchise, you can imagine those red locks are also going to garner you plenty of fans, but the hair was red before she got the call.
Johansson stated in an interview that “the Black Widow has dark red hair, and I think subconsciously I had decided to dye my hair, hoping they’d give me a call,” but when she was later asked about it she said “the best thing about hair color is that it’s only temporary.” Looks like we can expect to see a few different shades of Scarlett in the future.
13. Elizabeth Olsen
When Olsen made her acting debut, it was as a brunette in 2011 for the film Silent House. It was a horror movie about a girl who becomes trapped at her lakeside retreat and starts to have supernatural forces wreck havoc. You can imagine she would have wished she had the powers of another brunette beauty, Wanda Maximoff, who she plays in the Avengers series.
In 2011, when Olsen decided to try and pull off a blonde look, she said “I’m not working on a movie right now because I’m back in school and I’ve never been blond, so I just went for it, I love it so much, I want to keep going lighter. My co-star, Sarah Paulson told me that’s called ‘blonderexia.'”
Olson’s upcoming film, Wind River, will also feature Avengers star Jeremy Renner and Jon Bernthal whose also no stranger to ass-kicking, appearing both in the Daredevil series and The Walking Dead.
12. Olivia Wilde
It’s hard not to imagine Olivia Wilde as the bombshell blonde Alex Kelly that appeared in The O.C. for 13 episodes, especially because she was rocking that faux-hawk. Yet it was because of her acting on the show that helped her land the role of Dr. Remmy Hadley on House where she played a beautiful brunette from 2007-2012. While Wilde does not have a ton of films coming out in the near future, the one she does, Black Dog, Red Dog, is definitely appealing. The movie is co-written and co-directed by James Franco, who is also the lead and will also star Whoopi Goldberg.
Off-screen, Wilde is married to actor Jason Sudeikis and the two have one child together and another on the way. As a fun fact that you may not know about Wilde, she was first married when she was only 19. The wedding was a secret and as a result, occurred in an abandonded school bus.
11. Rachel McAdams
Rachel McAdams is one of the most beautiful women in Hollywood, and as a result, are you really surprised to see she can pull off several hair colors? When asked why she went with a redhead style look for Wedding Crashers, McAdams stated that she enjoyed how unique it felt to be a redhead and that she felt very southern.
She can often be seen rocking blonde hair though, often accompanies with red lipstick which she has said she often does as a homage to Marilyn Monroe. The photo on the left was taken back in 2013 when McAdams was attending the premiere of About Time in London. While she’s gone brunette and back to blonde since that time, all we care about is that she keeps acting. Her upcoming film, Doctor Strange, also stars Benedict Cumberbatch and is one of the most anticipated films to come out in the next year.
10. Lena Headey
When you think of Cersei, your mind might go to the less than flattering look she had to sport during her walk of shame. Yet in real life, Lena Headey is often seen pulling off a short black hairstyle. If that wasn’t different enough from the long, blonde wigs that typically adorned the head of Headey, the actress is also covered in tattoos.
When talking about her self-declared obsession, Headey has said “I’ll be outside a tattoo shop and hear the needle and think, ‘I could just get a little one that nobody would see … ” When you’re a famous celebrity though it’s probably a lot harder to hide little things like permanent additions to your body. Especially when people have seen all of your body.
If you want to see a drastically different looking Lena, check her out in the fantastic action film Dredd, in which she’s not only got the black hair, but sports a lovely scar on her face.
9. Alyson Hannigan
Alyson Hannigan may be the first person who comes to your mind when you think about who a “classic redhead” in terms of Hollywood. Hannigan’s most prominent role came in the sex-comedy American Pie, where her ginger-locks helped win the appeal of Jason Biggs. It also helped that she was a dynamite redhead on the television series Buffy the Vampire Slayer. When fans tuned into How I Met Your Mother, they also got the benefit of seeing a red-headed Lily Aldrin. Yet as the series continued, Lily changed her hair to the darker color you see above. Hannigan was happy to cut off the long brunette hair that the character had and shortly after the series wrapped Hannigan took to social media to show off a much shorter hairstyle as a sign that they were done filming.
Hannigan is slowing down as an actress as of late but is about to start work on a TV movie The First Wives Club that is scheduled to come out in 2016.
8. Kirstin Dunst
There is no doubt that Kirsten Dunst is a beautiful blonde. She made her acting debut at a young age, but by 2000 had started to make waves as a young blonde bombshell with The Virgin Suicides. As you can imagine though, the blonde hair doesn’t go over so well if you get cast as Mary Jane, so the world got to see Dunst pull off the red hair. When asked about it, Dunst stated that the red hair “made me feel soft and vulnerable.”
Dunst has several films coming out in the next little while, none of which may be more exciting than Hidden Figures. The movie also stars Kevin Costner and tells the story of the African-American women team that helped provide NASA with the information that they needed to launch the first successful space mission. It’s clear that no matter what hair color she’s sporting, Dunst will be able to bring home a powerhouse performance that’s worthy of our attention.
7. Katy Perry
Katy Perry has been known to pull off all kinds of different hair colors, ranging from green to purple, to less “out there” colors like the black hair you see above. When she was asked about her original color though, Perry said “I’m naturally the most boring dishwater squirrel brown, So I’ve been playing with colors since I was 15.” She went on to talk about how while it’s great how she looks all beautiful and put together on stage, at home she rarely goes through that effort because she does not always have 3 hours to get together (seems pretty reasonable!).
Want to know the confidence she has in her hairstyles? Back in 2015, Katy Perry appeared at the Harper’s Bazaar Icons Event sporting shoulder-length red curls. But by the time the afterparty had started, Perry had dropped the red-hair to show off a pink bob.
Whether or not you care about Katy Perry, there is no doubt that the world does. It was announced on July 4th, that Katy Perry has the largest following on Twitter with over 90 million followers.
6. Emma Stone
Emma Stone has a fantastic career ahead of her, and with different beauty products being linked to her, like a mascara from Revlon, it’s clear that the world also knows she’s gorgeous. Looking at the above photos it can be hard to pick a preferred look for the star, but when asked about it, Stone said “Probably red, even though I’m blonde naturally, I identify most with red hair. My mom’s a redhead, so maybe I grew up seeing it more than seeing myself in a mirror. But I like blonde, too. It’s just hair.”
As you can imagine with someone as popular as Stone, paparazzi follows her constantly, so when she knocked away some brunette hair for a platinum blonde look on May 22nd, you can imagine that also became a talking point. So much so that interviews tracked down Tracey Cunningham, who was the color stylist who did the do.
“If you want to go blonder this summer like Emma, ask your colorist if she or he is using Olaplex 1 and 2 during the lightening process, also make sure they have Olaplex 3 for you to have as a take-home treatment to protect your color and hair from blow-drying, curling irons, and the harsh summer sun.”
5. Rihanna
In 2005, Rihanna said that she would never want to have long and light brown hair again. Though since then the only thing that seems to be clear is that Rihanna can’t settle on a style. Ranging from extensions to curls, Rihanna decided to bust out the red in 2010, which we’ve seen her wear both in shorter and longer styles. Let’s hope you think she looks good, because it was revealed back in 2014 that Rihanna spends roughly £30,000 a week to keep up with her beauty routines, and that also includes tanning.
At the time, Rihanna also had an eyelash technician that she kept on-call 24/7 because you never know when an eyelash crisis might occur.
4. Miley Cyrus
Miley Cyrus may have made big break into Hollywood playing innocent Hannah Montana, but the adult Miley seems to be anything but innocent. Whether it’s raunchy lyrics, pictures, videos or otherwise, Cyrus is never too far from the headlines. Miley debuted some blonde hair back in March, adding on her Instagram “When you feel weird about [your] new bangzzzzzzz . Practicing non attachment! Everything is constantly coming and going! Lessons always to be learned even [through] dumb s–t that seems like it’s meaningless!”
The photo on the right also shows the blonde hairstyle but also features Miley featuring a lot less makeup than you may see from one of her music videos. While you may prefer her blonde hair, Cyrus ranted about it on Facebook, saying “sitting in a random apartment with nothing to do but smoke weed (which I should’ve just appreciated) and **** with my hair obvi, something inside told me I’d regret it… now I’m out here looking like every Suzy Q & Sally B there is… Either this shit needs to grow out at super speed or I’m about to go in for a ****** hair cut realllllll quick!!!”
3. Emilia Clarke
Emilia Clarke may best be known for pulling off the blonde look as Daenarys, but if you hunt down some of the photo shoots she’s done it’s clear that she’s a huge fan of her natural brunette look. Probably a good thing they use wigs on the show! Clarke was announced as the sexiest woman alive in 2015 by Esquire magazine and as a result gave them a photo shoot that made it evident why she was awarded that title.
While there are not any dragons, you can see the darker-haired Clarke in her upcoming film Above Suspicion that co-stars Johnny Knoxville
(bet you didn’t see that one coming!). Clarke has also finished filming the movie Voice From the Stone that is set in the 1950s and tells the story of a nurse (Clarke) who is drawn to a young boy who stops talking after his mother passes away.
2. Jennifer Lawrence
Jennifer Lawrence decided to step away from her natural blonde look to rock a deep brunette for the movie Silver Linings Playbook. It was clearly a great decision, as she went on to win an Academy Award for her performance (though you know, her acting may have had something to do with it as well). Lawrence has appeared in several blockbusters, including The Hunger Games series and overall, her films have grossed over $5 billion.
When asked about the dark hair she needs to pull off the character of Katniss, Lawrence joked “I think I just have to stay tan, or I’ll look like the girl from The Ring.”
Though speaking of looking ghostly, Lawrence stepped out at CinemaCon 2016 showing off an icy-blonde platinum hair color that as you can see, has a lot more white than blonde to it. Not like her fans are complaining.
1. Beyonce
When Beyonce was first making a name for herself with Destiny’s Child, she could be seen rocking some platinum blonde streaks through her naturally beautiful brown hair. She may look gorgeous to you in the photo on the right in 2014, but it was not long before that hair was chopped down to chin-length.
Beyonce has performed on some of the biggest stages of all time, with all different colors of hair, but always tends to find a way to make herself look gorgeous. When talking about her appearance growing up, Beyonce said that she would have been lost if not for the guidance of her Mother, “she made sure we had our lip gloss or blush in our purses. She made us pay attention to the details.”
Given that Beyonce now has enough money to hire a team of stylists (and maybe even an eyelash technician) you can imagine her look is always going to be on point.
